INTERIOR DESIGN

The meaning of space. Aesthetics. Functionality.

Interior design is not just about furniture – it is a profession where creativity, aesthetics, and functionality come together to create an environment that meets human needs and emotional perceptions. During your studies, you will learn how to create spaces that tell a story, evoke feelings and at the same time meet technical and contemporary requirements. This program is designed for those who value spatial thinking, creative self-expression and the desire to influence their surroundings. Whether you are passionate about colour harmony, composition, or spatial planning, interior design will allow you to develop your strengths.

 

Language: Latvian

Degree to be achieved: Professional bachelor′s degree in design and interior designer qualification

Accreditation: Study direction is accredited till January 18, 2030.

 

What will you learn?

  • Comprehensive interior design knowledge: space planning, interior element design, ergonomics, lighting design.
  • Practical skills: computer graphics, 3D modelling, technical drawing, mock-ups.
  • Visual communication: colour theory, composition, history of design and style.
  • Project management: from concept to implementation.
  • International experience: collaboration with industry and internship opportunities abroad.

 

What will you do?

  • Create interior design projects – from idea to visualization and technical implementation.
  • Analyse spaces – understand their functional and aesthetic potential.
  • Use specialized digital technologies – SketchUp, AutoCAD, Photoshop, etc.
  • You will collaborate with professionals from various fields – architects, designers, construction industry representatives.
  • You will manage projects – from planning to organization.

 

Where can you do your internship?

Students have the opportunity to do internships in interior design and architecture offices, furniture and lighting manufacturing companies, exhibition and event design, commercial premises, as well as state and municipal institutions. It is also possible to participate in ERASMUS+ programs, gaining international professional experience and receiving a scholarship.

Aims of the study programme

Aims of the study programme:

  • To provide students with knowledge, skills and competencies set in design and interior design according to the 6th level of the framework defined in the Latvian education classification.
  • Train professional specialists in design and interior design with analytical and critical thinking, whose knowledge and skills make it possible to work with projects in the field of design and interior design.

Study programme objectives:

  • To provide the study process that meets the requirements of regulatory enactments and labour market, as well as a student-centred approach to higher education.
  • To provide students with the knowledge and competencies of architecture, interior design and the value criteria of related industries in a cultural historical, political, economic, technical, social, aesthetic and ethnic context.
  • To promote qualification development of the teaching staff in design and scientific fields.
  • Provide students with competence in designing a conceptual model for the interior project, creating a functional scheme, creating a full-scale interior project.
  • To provide and develop practical activities in the study programme.
  • To provide and develop infrastructure and facilities under the study programme implementation needs.
  • To develop international collaboration with related higher education institutions, enterprises and organizations.

Learning outcomes of the study programme:

Knowledge (knowledge and understanding)

  • Knows the interior project composition.
  • Knows the basic principles of space, environment, and furniture design.

Skills(ability to apply knowledge, communication skills, general skills)

  • Is able to perform premises, object exploration before the interior design project begins and interpret its results.
  • Is able to design the interior project concept.
  • Is capable of drawing a full-scale interior project.
  • Is able to present the interior project.
  • Is able to navigate in the modern and traditional range of construction and finishing materials.
  • Is able to organise their work independently.
  • Is able to work in a team with other professionals in the professional field.

Competence (analysis, synthesis, evaluation)

  • Is able to gauge the space before design, understand the interactions between interior design and architectural environment.
  • Is able to offer creative solutions for interior design.
  • Is able to use various types of information in decision-making during the construction of an interior project and author supervision period.
