EGILS LEVITS VISITS THE EKA UNIVERSITY

Egils Levits, judge at the Court of the European Union (EU), visits University of Economics and Culture (EKA) with special guest lecture on European Court practice.
Egils Levits′, judge at the Court of the EU, guest lecture European Court practice - Latvia′s entrepreneurs and analysis of commercial law cases has drawn big audience of the EKA students and other interests in the EKA University premises. For coming specialists Egils Levits explained how the EU is established and how it works, what are the EU institutions, analyzed the EU Court trials and how successful the Republic of Latvia is represented there. Fundamental principles and values of the democracy were involved in the gust lecture as well.
Judge at the Court of the EU Egils Levits admitted to students that Latvia could be proud of good reputation in the EU institutions. Representatives of Latvia are very active - they are interested and ask a lot of questions, while there are very few court processes against Latvia, all of them on relatively small cases.
Anna Saltikova, the Chairman of the Board of the EKA University, admits that for her as for a lawyer Egils Levits is the authority, thus it is great pleasure to meet him in the EKA premises and offer students a possibility to learn from his experience. "I think this kind of lecture would be valuable for every citizen. During the quest lecture our students were inspired to think and analyze, to value how important is a vote of each person at the European Parliament election. After the lecture I can state that people who attended Egils Levits′ quest lecture will definitely responsively participate in the next EU elections," admits Anna Saltikova.
Egils Levits graduated in law and in political science from the University of Hamburg, later - in social science and philosophy. Research Assistant at the Faculty of Law, University of Kiel, afterwards at Germany and Eastern Europe Research institute at Gettingene. After renewal of the Republic of Latvia Adviser to Supreme Council, Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Justice, deputy of the Saeima, Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia for Germany and Austria. Elected as Judge at the European Court of Human Rights in 1995, since 2004 - judge at the Court of Justice. Author of the declaration "On the Restoration of the Independence of the Republic of Latvia" of 4 May 1990 and Saeima′s Introduction conceptions.
